Here are my comments on what two of my fellow eng1101 students have learned this term:) Firstly, I have really enjoyed reading Tiffany's blog posts this semester and I particularly appreciated how she mentioned that becoming competent with MLA formatting has ben the hardest thing to learn this summer semester. I am completely on the same page when she mentions that " MLA and the works cited portion was the biggest obstacle for me". Totally agree that learning this was the most difficult! Not only is it difficult to find and source all of the reference information, but like math class, there is an exact right and wrong answer, making it much more difficult to get correct. There are many things that I have learned during the past 6 weeks.  Along our learning journey, we tend to move on without thought after each new obstacle of ignorance has been successfully overcome, and we then take that knowledge for granted. This is why I am grateful for the chance to reflect on the new knowledge and skills I have now developed over this past month and a half.  Now that I think about it, there are so many new things I have learned, and here is my best effort to briefly state which have been the most significant things I have learned along this journey.  Personal: 1. How to manage a large workload and can make it work from home.  2. That using a physical calendar is great when going into a new and demanding school schedule.  3. I usually try to avoid political talk, since its proven to effectively divide and polarise people, and has caused numerous fights among my friends and family. So nice.  But on the other hand it really is a great way to rev up the conversation... So here we go:) If you want to find great illogical arguments by politicians, look no further than the platform war zone that facilitates only the best in comedic political rivalry. Twitter.  Here's a classic. In english you would call this an  Ad-hominem. Latin for “to the man.” This is done when someone focuses their critique on a person’s appearance, character, way of speaking, etc, instead of refuting their ideas or opinions. Im not sure if you know this guy but he specialises in ad-hominem's and typically fires them at reporters and political opponents.  Trump could avoid this logical fallacy if he focused more on addressing the opposing ideas or opinions clearly. How do platforms phone softwares allow me to identify the contexts and communicate effectively? Well firstly on my iPhone iMessages, the user experience & user interface (UX/UI) is fantastic in the way that intuitively guides me and establishes the context of my conversations. It clearly displays whom the conversations are with, and the communication history with each person as well. I am able to firstly select whom I want to talk to from the manipulatable list of contacts, and when I select someone I can see our entire text and call history which is consistent and intuitive.  Friend: wud lmk Me: ? Friend: smh Maybe I'm just a bit slow? But I still don't know what this guy was on about, lol. But to get to the point, the user experience is super easy and intuitive and provides a great medium for communication with my contacts. As I said in Post 7 my two favourite strategies for putting together a great piece of writing are: 1. Firstly, to throw isht at the wall and see what sticks, a few times. 2. And then use that to create an essay outline to guide my writing further. As always I used these primary strategies in putting together my Doc2 and once again they worked wonderfully. My final outline looks something like this... Intro - Why you should major in business. P1 - U nlike many other majors, it will equip you with a range of useful knowledge and skills far more likely to equate to ultimate success in the real world. P2 - It w ill allow you to foster a quality network of ambitious business people, which is likely to be your greatest asset on your journey to success. Conclusion - Summarise main points with strong ending statement. Simple but effective right? I never would have thought about these points in the simple structure that they found themselves in. As I made very clear in my previous post  I am not exactly an MLA expert and far from it. But through sheer tenacity, I am slowly figuring it out. Here is my top MLA pet peev - which 100% would have made my long list of first-world problems. There is more than one MLA!  :/ Just so everyone understands, I want to firstly explain that I have never used MLA before.  And it was only after I got an initial grade of "F" on my Doc1, that not only is MLA a b**** but also that there are MULTIPLE VERSIONS of the thing! Im not sure how it got passed me but I eventually figured out that we are using MLA8 and MLA8 ONLY, which is the latest version of it.  All those hours of researching MLA, putting notes together and revising them every night before bed (slightly exaggerated) all so that I could eventually realise that those youtube videos were  outdated... ugh. So now that I know we are using MLA 8, I will say that my favourite help source on MLA 8 is this video right here ...

Time to vent:) So there is one significant problem that I struggle with in academic writing.  Referencing.  Especially in APA and/or MLA 8 formatting. I don't know what it is, but sometimes I feel as though I am seriously trying to crack an uncrackable code! Im not sure if everyone experiences the same frustrations with referencing as I do, but I know for sure that for me personally it is certainly the biggest obstacle in my way of getting good grades. I can write a great essay, but proper referencing just hasn't clicked yet.  Since it's assigned of me, I must also add that texting is awfully easier than academic writing because of unneeded referencing. How would you feel if you couldn't send a text unless each statement had to reference appropriate sources!! Me: Make sure you bring your ID to the DMV sis, otherwise they will turn you away. For my lucky number 7th post, today I will be staring with you the strategies I used to organise my Doc2, and hopefully help you out in the process:) 1.  Firstly, my favorite strategy of putting together a great piece of writing is by firstly throwing isht at the wall and seeing what sticks, to put it bluntly. I usually don't have much idea of what the end result is going to be in the beginning. But just by writing, reading and organising, writing, reading and organising, over and over again, I know that it will slowly refine itself into a good piece of work. I will probably go over my doc2 over 50 times before I'm happy with it.  As the legendary Keith Hamon said, even the greatest of writers usually cannot create a perfectly polished piece of writing on their first attempt.  2.  Secondly, by the time I get comfortable with writing and have made a few attempts to put together an introduction, hopefully I will have a good idea of what I will be writing about. I believe that the education system is outdated in many ways. There are many basics that the educational system has omitted and younger people are suffering from it.  Don't get me wrong, there are many fantastic fundamentals that young people gain in school which help them to operate well in the world. Fundamentals such as maths, reading, writing and communication skills along with discipline and work ethic, etc. These are all fantastic attributes for a person to function in the real world.  But I believe that there are a few main things missing. I don't believe that the school system ( at least  in countries in the U.S) prepare you for success in the real world. I believe that the school system is deficient in the following three ways. Firstly, students are not typically engaged in thinking about their futures, what options they have and how the world works. Young people need to be exposed and engaged in a plethora of options that will get them excited about the future. ...

Im sure all of my 0 followers are begging the question... (at least the ones that are taking english1101 at MGA) how can I add authority and value to my Doc 2 assignment?? Your audience are likely all to be new college students who may or may not know what they want to do with their lives. Before this summer school semester at MGA, I spent a few days a week applying for scholarships.  Usually for each scholarship I would have to write a 500-1000 word essay on something that they specified.  The first scholarship I applied for was the American Bullion Scholarship with $1000 up for grabs!  (Totally recommend you apply for scholarships like these btw) In the essay I had to write, I had to write about  “Which will perform better in the next metals rally, Gold or Silver?” Now I was definitely no expert on the price movements of gold or silver. This is a question I have struggled with during my entire college career.  Finding authoritative, credible and relevant references for any piece of work you are working on in your academics, can be a difficult task for most.  Thankfully since I have moved to MGA I have found an answer! I believe that the most important thing that we can continue to learn, here in English Composition 1, is learning to become more and more competent at ' effectively communicating with others through writing'. This objective encompasses: - Learning how to read and interpret documents written by varying writers - Learning how to write effectively and appropriately to varying audiences I believe that 'effectively communicating with others through writing' as a whole is the most important aspect of this class and will further reinforce students' written literacy and communication skills in order to interact well with others. It is not the most specific learning objective, but it is the most essential big-picture mission that everyone involved in this class must acknowledge and keep in mind when moving forward.  Being able to communicate and interact through writing is essential to achieving almost any goal in life, and certainly is essential for doing well in college!...

Hi everyone!  This is Luke here and I have created this blog for my English 0999.10A class.  Whats awesome is that I am currently working on a real blog of my own as well in my own time (thewealthcreationseries.com) so I feel right at home working on this new one for english class.  Through this blog I really do hope to connect and communicate with fellow classmates.
